Falconry does work in Pest Control
Today
Falconry is practised by many people in some countries more than
others. But Falconry can also be used for Pest Control especially
between April and September when the Seagulls leave the coast to come
in land to nest and breed. This migration inland by Seagulls can
cause many problems not only the fact of the large nests but also the
fact the gull will vigorously protect there nest and eggs and when
the egg hatch there young. A gull will attack humans to protect and
will also attack to get food.
Never
under estimate the lengths seagull will go to. They are very
intelligent birds. If unchecked a colony of Gulls with grow in size
very quickly.
For
example is a colony of gulls settles on a warehouse roof of 100 bird
in April (that's 50 pair) and lets say each pair lay 3 eggs a time 3
times between April and September,so that's 50 X 3 = 150 X 3 = 450 .
So come September you now have a Colony of 550 presuming all eggs
hatch.
The
next year your first 100 will return and do the same again but the
year after that the 100 will return with the 450.So every second year
the young will return with the Colony. The answer to the problem is
simple Falconry paired with egg and nest removal before the eggs
hatch. As I said before Seagulls are intelligent they see the Hawk of
Falcon as a threat and also realise very quickly as the eggs are
smashed and nests removed that the roof or area they are in is not a
safe place to raise a family.
The
Falconry side of things has to be done correctly. As I have heard
horror stories of late about people turning up with a bird of prey
and walking round sites with the bird on the fist and not letting the
bird fly. Added to that I have heard of visiting sites once a month.
Sorry to say Once a month is no good at all and turning up once a
month and not even doing an egg and nest removal well to me that is
just taking money from the customer under false pretences.
Yes
there are other options such as proofing (ie netting spikes etc) but
this is the expensive root in the long term, as your proofing will
need renewing every six years as long as you take out a service
contract which costs extra and if you don't then maybe you will be
looking at 3 years before renewal. The other option is a speaker
system. Oh yes this is a good one 5 figure sum for what they call a
good one. Interested in seeing the results of this. Just have a look
at this video below.
Like
I said earlier Gulls are intelligent they know if something is a
threat to them or not. As a matter of fact so are pigeons.
I
have heard over the past year time and time again how Falconry does
not work, but seeing is believing and with everything I have been
taught so fare and what I am seeing with my own eyes is, when
Falconry in the pest control industry is done in the right way it is
not only very effective but also cost effective for the customer.
Since
April this year the Team has been working on a site in Kings Lynn.
Everyone there has said to the team they reckon there is a 75%
reduction in the Gull population this year compared to last year.
