Pest Controllers educate the young.
After a busy week doing Pest Control early Sunday morning Gary and I packed the van up with 2 Falcons 2 Harris Hawks and a Kestrel and set off for Somerset, A little Village called Tickenham near Bristol and the "Jacklands Fishing Lakes" to attend a Taster day for "Pass it on Young Sports."
Personally I take my hate off to all involve in this fantastic idea in this modern day and age where Kids spend most of there time in font of a TV screen playing games or hanging around in the streets causing trouble.
I always remember as a young child going out for long walks with my grandfather in the New Forest and him showing me places of the beaten track that most people don't see. This was always for me a big adventure and I looked forward to visiting to me Grand parents.I feel over the years, as we have entered the age of computers and Games consoles and as life has become faster moving, all the old values and old skills only learnt in the country side have been forgotten. So for me Pass it on Young Sports is a fantastic idea.
Pass It On is run by volunteer and is a non profit making organisation..The main volunteers have spent most of there lives involved in one way or another in Country side pursuits form Gamekeepers, Pest Controllers,Fishermen and more,
For me at this event the best sight was seeing the young children's faces when pulled a Trout out of the fishing lake then moved over to another stand where the learnt how to light a fire, gut there fish, and then cook there catch..
Also when the Children visited us and our collection of Harris Hawks and Falcons they got the chance to put on a Falconers glove and hold Bella our small Kestrel.
I would love to see something like this over here in Cambridgeshire. The Guys at Pass It On have hit the nail on the head on there Facebook page when the say,and I quote " We enjoy getting them off those blasted Xboxes, or off those street corners, and stopping them from getting 'so bored'. We like to show them a better way forward."
This is a better way forward and the guys at Pass It On are also only to willing to teach the adults accompanying the children as well.
With a small Shooting Range,Fly fishing, Archery,Course fishing, bush craft,Gun dogs ferrets and use with our Birds of Prey there was a lot for children and Adults to do at this Teaser day.
Well despite this being and event and at events we always have to be alert keeping in mind our birds are not just used for events and displays, they are working birds. Monday to Friday they are out around London and the East of England providing a service doing Gull and Pigeon control. The event, I must say had a relaxing feeling, and we felt very welcome by everyone.involved.
.
Well that's it form me this week as its Tuesday night and Mr B has just rang to say we are off down to London around Midnight. Ill say sorry now for any spelling mistakes or grammar i'm not a writer but just trying to give you all an idea of what Backwoods Falconry is all about and what we do, not only during the week but also on weekends. To finish I have embedded the Facebook Live Stream I did at the event at the weekend..
Till next time all the best: RU Gladstone
